Creekers Coaching School

27 Jun 2021 by Andrew Harris

Hello Creekers,

Diamond Creek Basketball Club are a solely volunteer run organisation, as such we rely on our members to help run the Club; Mums, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Uncles and Aunties, we always need help. Especially coaching!

Basketball at a grassroots level suffers from a fairly high turnover of coaches. Feedback from Creekers coaches over the past few seasons has been that most coaches get thrown in the deep end when they first coach which can be a really negative and stressful experience. This can be even worse for those coming from a non-basketball background.

We have been looking at a number of ways to improve the experience of first time coaches and thanks to our Major sponsor Marchetti Chwyla Real Estate we are launching our Creekers Coaching School.

Our first Creekers Coaching School will run across the Spring 2021 season and aims to introduce any potential coaches to the skills, thought processes and disciplines needed to coach junior basketball before they actually need to coach.

The school will cover:

1. Obligations of a Coach, 2. What to expect from coaching, 3. Rules and referees, 4. What to teach, 5. Ways to teach, 6. Session planning, 7. Game Day, 8. Certification - Community Coaching General Principles - PBTR – Child Protection - Community Coach - Club Coach 9. Pathways. The school is open to anyone 14 years or older at no cost. In addition, any coach that completes the season will be entitled to a credit on any future season registrations as well as the club sponsoring their Community and Club Coaching Courses.

The school will start the 2nd week of term 3, if you are interested, please email coaching@dcbasketball.com.au
